RUNWAY
ELIAS-CLARKE PUBLICATIONS
1221 Avenue of the Americas, also known as the McGraw-Hill Building is a skycraper built in 1969, located at Sixth Avenue, Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York, between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue.
It is one of several buildings which are part of the Rockfeller Center complex expansion in the 1960's.
It is 674 feet (205 m) high and 51 stories. Opened in 1969. The Runway offices are located on the 17th Floor.
The expansion consisted of the three buildings collectively known as the 'XYZ Buildings' (this is the Y building), each with similar slab-like massing of different heights and designed by Wallace Harrison's firm.
The Runway offices are partially corridors in the neighbouring Fox building and partially sets.
It was used for the exteriors and lobby of Elias-Clarke's headquarters in the 2006 film 'The Devil Wears Prada.'
RUNWAY: SKETCHES, MOCKUPS & GRAPHICS
"Jeff Gonchor and I had worked together for some time when he was asked to design THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. He asked me to join him, and we worked the way we always work.
We begin to shape what will be the key sets for the film. In this case it would be the offices of RUNWAY magazine. We had a lot of visual reference, though not of the actual VOGUE magazine offices for obvious reasons. So we began to shape the space for the magazine headquarters using the reference we had and information Jess received from the director.
The plan and sketch here were early ideas when he wanted a much more modern and open space than is typical for midtown Manhattan offices, or for publishing offices. The elevators, lobby and reception are in the upper left corner of the plan, with the clothing and shoe vault below. The main area is a large bullpen. In the middle is a raised platform which leads to Miranda Priestly's (Meryl Streep) office and the desks of her assistants (Emily Charlton and Andrea Sachs).
